The role of nursing in prenatal care in the face of a congenital heart disease diagnosis: supporting the family from a perspective of hope.

ntroduction: Congenital heart defects represent a critical challenge in global public health, being the most common congenital malformation and a leading cause of mortality in early childhood. Given this scenario, healthcare services should not only focus on the accuracy of early diagnosis, but also recognize that the confirmation of a fetal heart defect transcends the clinical barrier. Confirmation of the diagnosis places the family in a state of latent vulnerability, where feelings of guilt and fear of the unknown are mixed with the uncertainty of a challenging prognosis. At this moment, emotional fragility demands families facing a diagnosis of congenital heart disease, in light of the Multidimensional Theory of Hope. Materials and methods: This study aimed to map the scientific evidence on the role of nurses as key players in family support and prenatal care, integrating clinical rigor with sensitive care, under the perspective of the Multidimensional Theory of Hope as a resilience tool. This is an integrative literature review, of a qualitative nature, with searches conducted in the BVS, SciELO, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases. The search strategy used descriptors related to nursing, congenital heart disease, and prenatal care. Articles published between 2016 and 2026 were selected, totaling a sample of 27 scientific productions. Results/Discussion: The results indicate that early detection, even in utero, through fetal echocardiography, is crucial for reducing mortality rates, including pulse oximetry, known as the "little heart test," performed after the first 24 hours of life, thus contributing to greater efficiency in neonatal care. However, studies reveal that effective nursing care goes far beyond compliance with protocols, fundamentally residing in welcoming, active listening, and the provision of health education in a clear and accessible way.
