Abstract

This article reports on the internship experience in Hospital Psychology, conducted in an ICU of a private hospital, highlighting the challenges and intervention strategies in the care of critical patients. The work was based on the biopsychosocial approach, focusing on psychological assessment, emotional support, and humanization, aiming to reduce the detrimental effects of the intensive care environment. It was observed that factors such as social isolation, physical space, biological factors, and fear of death contribute to psychological distress, requiring multiprofessional interventions, primarily carried out by psychologists. The results demonstrated the importance of active listening and strengthening therapeutic bonds to reduce anxiety and promote adaptation to hospitalization. It is concluded that Hospital Psychology plays an essential role in the ICU, integrating mental health and physical care, with a positive impact on the quality of life of patients and their families.

Raiany Soares , UNIVERSIDADE DO ESTADO DE MINAS GERAIS

Undergraduate student in Psychology at Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais (UEMG). She is one of the founders of the Liga Acadêmica de Psicologia Hospitalar e Saúde Coletiva at UEMG. She was a member of Desconstrua – Grupo de Pesquisa e Extensão em Direitos Fundamentais, Políticas Públicas e Minorias, working in the public health division. She was a scholarship holder in the Programa de Apoio a Projetos de Extensão – PAEx/UEMG through the project "Serviço de Atendimento Psicossocial". She worked as a plantonista in the project "Plantão Psicológico", carried out at the Núcleo Ensino e Aplicação em Psicologia (NEAP). She is currently a research fellow at the Laboratório de Avaliação Psicológica e Mídias Digitais (LAPMID), participating in the study "Associação entre o uso de telas, funções executivas e controle parental em adolescentes". Research interests: Public health policies; Health psychology; Hospital psychology; Collective health; Cyberpsychology; Information and Communication Technologies; Digital games.

Undergraduate student in Psychology at Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais (UEMG) and Extension Director of the Liga Acadêmica de Psicologia Hospitalar e Saúde Coletiva (LAPHSC). He works in the extension project Serviço de Atendimento Psicossocial (SAP), linked to the Núcleo de Ensino e Aplicação em Psicologia (NEAP), which develops collective activities in territories within the municipality of Ituiutaba. He participated, for 1 year and a half, in interventions within the Estratégias de Saúde da Família (ESFs), performing tasks such as screening, mapping, facilitating therapeutic groups, and conducting art workshops for the community.

Undergraduate student in Psychology at Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais (UEMG) and Marketing Director of the Liga Acadêmica de Psicologia Hospitalar e Saúde Coletiva (LAPHSC). She is a member of the Grupo de Estudo e Pesquisa sobre Morte e Cuidados Paliativos (GEMPA), contributing to both research and outreach activities. Master’s degree in Sciences from Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (USP)/Programa Oncologia (2013–2016). Specialization and Professional Development in Psychology and Oncology from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) – (2010–2011). Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais (UEMG) – Unidade Ituiutaba (2005–2009). Tenured Professor in the Psychology Program at Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais (UEMG – Unidade Ituiutaba); Professor in the Medicine and Psychology Programs at Faculdade Mais de Ituiutaba (FacMais). Currently conducts research and outreach activities on the following topics: hospital psychology, suicide, grief, oncology, palliative care, and death.
