Experiences in Palliative Care: A Personal Account

The role of psychology in the field of Palliative Care is based on its ability to offer support and understanding, with the ultimate goal of promoting the humanization of care during this phase. It also seeks to understand the patient as a whole being who, within the hospital context, experiences conflicts arising from the illness process, marked by pain, discomfort, and the constant possibility of death. In this context, the article reports the internship experience of a fifth-year psychology student, carried out over one semester at a philanthropic hospital located in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The objective of this study is to report the experiences and contributions of the internship, as well as to understand the role of the hospital psychologist within the context of Palliative Care and to identify psychological interventions in this setting. To this end, a descriptive study was conducted, in the form of an experience report, with theoretical foundations in Hospital Psychology and Palliative Care. In summary, a significant and positive impact on academic training was observed, including the expansion of knowledge regarding the practice of hospital psychology and the development of skills in the health field, in addition to a better understanding of essential aspects related to psychological work in Palliative Care. The experience also highlighted how psychology contributes to Palliative Care, emphasizing an approach focused on relieving the patient's psychological suffering, providing support and comfort to family members, fostering interdisciplinary teamwork, and improving related fields, all aimed at enhancing quality of life during the process of dying and coping with illness.
