Abstract

This article is a report of the experiences of students from the Maurício de Nassau University Center who completed supervised internship II at the Psychosocial Rehabilitation Clinic – Estância Bela Vista in São Luís, Maranhão, from April 14 to May 26, 2025, with psychologist Luís Henrique as their preceptor. The activities consisted of clinical case studies, group listening, psychological support, and therapeutic workshops, such as discussion circles, movie sessions, and music therapy with patients with mental disorders, alcohol and other drug dependence, chronic conditions (EDQ), elderly people with comorbidities, and bariatric patients. The American Psychiatric Association (APA, 2022) defines chemical dependency (or substance use disorder) as a pattern that persists due to the abusive use of psychoactive substances that results in problems in physical and mental health, interpersonal relationships, and work life. In relation to bariatric patients, complications with the abusive use of alcohol and other drugs are frequent and can progress to mental disorders and more serious illnesses. The elderly are more likely to develop some pathologies and require a more sensitive approach and humanized psychological interventions. Psychological suffering can have many impacts on the lives of individuals, therefore psychological interventions such as therapeutic workshops, psychological support and other practices aim to promote mental health and alleviate this suffering. Finally, the results obtained during the internship contributed to the development of the psychologist's technical and theoretical skills, knowledge about different mental disorders, as well as the understanding of the management and importance of humanized therapeutic treatment.
